SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION
SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATON
What is sociological imagination?
What does it means to think
sociologically?
What is promising about it?
We can employ sociological imagination to
find solutions by considering the social, historical, and political contexts.
A framework for interpreting our social
reality that much beyond any common sense conception we may get from our
limited social experiences is the sociological imagination, a term developed by
C. Wright Mills (1916–1962). Mills
was a modern sociologist who contributed a great deal of understanding to how
people in society conduct their everyday lives. According to Mills Mills
stated: “Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be
understood without understanding both”. The
sociological imagination connects individual struggles to more significant societal
problems.
Background of Sociological Imagination
v Mills wrote on the class struggle at a time
when it was unpopular to do so.
v In the 1950s, there was a low level of class
awareness and there was rise of CONSUMER CULTURE (the result of the post-World
War II economic boom).
v People were under the impression that
everything was wonderful, but at the same time, exploitation, gender injustice,
and racial inequality persisted throughout history, and people's problems were
sometimes mistaken for personal difficulties.
v People lack social imagination when it comes
to problems like stigmas and mental health.
SOCIOLOGICAL
IMAGINATION is the
ability to think sociologically and to acquire sociological knowledge. All of
our common sense ideas come from our limited social experiences if sociological
imagination is absent. The capacity to create an awareness of how biography is
the result of historical processes and plays out within a larger context in
society is known as sociological imagination. This framework for interpreting
the social world transcends such restrictions. In order to engage in
sociological imagination, we have to separate ourselves from the familiar
reality of our own lives (common sense) and consider social concerns in a wider
framework.
Sociological imagination promotes rational
reasoning and critical thinking.
The objective of the development
of sociological imagination is to find the deeper, more complex
meanings of societal events.
Various kinds of social events fill our
individual lives. It is crucial to identify the causes and elements that are
responsible for these events. We need social imagination in order to comprehend
these events completely.
The terms "troubles" (personal
challenges) and "issues" (larger social challenges), often known
as biography and history, were introduced by Mills. People may recognize the
connections between the events in their own lives (biography) and the events in
their society (history) due to Mills' sociological imagination. In other words,
this kind of thinking enables people to recognize the connection between their
own experiences and the greater society in which they live.
The present structure and shape of
society is determined on the sequence of societal events/historical events.
There is a relationship between
individual and society
Self and society is connected
